SUV Comparison: 2019 Ford Explorer vs. 2019 Buick Enclave

If you are shopping for a new SUV the 2019 Ford Explorer and the 2019 Buick Enclave are most likely on your list to compare. These two vehicles offer plenty of convenience and both are affordably priced but there are several differences between the two. Here is a quick comparison to help with your research.

If you are a bottom line kind of person and your bottom line is the price, you are going to love the new Ford Explorer. This well equipped vehicle has a low starting MSRP of $32,365 significantly lower than the starting MSRP of the Buick Enclave at $40,000. The Explorer will also cost it’s owner less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Explorer will retain 49.2% to 53.91% of its original price after five years, while the Enclave only retains 43.2% to 45.22%.

Both the new Explorer and the new Enclave are well equipped with safety features, however the Explorer offers a few extras. Both vehicles have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front-wheel drive, rearview cameras, available collision warning systems, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, front and rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The Explorer offers all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Enclave doesn’t offer all-wheel drive. The Explorer also has optional inflatable middle row seatbelts that inflate when a collision is detected which helps to spread crash forces over a much larger area of the body and limits head and neck movement. This can help prevent spinal and internal injuries. The Enclave doesn’t offer inflatable seatbelts.

Power & Towing Capacity

The Explorer’s optional 2.3 turbo 4 cyl. engine produces 44 lbs.-ft. more torque (310 vs. 266) than the Enclave’s 3.6 DOHC V6 engine. The Explorer Sport/Platinum’s standard 3.5 turbo V6 engine produces 55 more horsepower (365 vs. 310) and 84 lbs.-ft. more torque (350 vs. 266) than the Enclave’s 3.6 DOHC V6 engine.

Towing capacity on the Ford explorer is much higher than then Buick Enclave. The Explorer’s standard towing capacity is 2000 pounds while the Enclave is limited to only 1500 pounds.

Passenger & Cargo Space

The Ford Explorer is slightly larger than the Enclave and affords both driver and passengers more space to stretch out. The Explorer has .4 inches more front headroom, 1.7 inches more front legroom, .7 inches more rear headroom, .6 inches more rear legroom and .2 inches more third row headroom than the Enclave.

As for cargo space, the Explorer has a standard third row seat which folds flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly.  The Explorer also has a switch that automatically lowers or raises the Explorer Sport/Platinum’s optional second and third row seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Buick Enclave does not offer seats that fold into the floor or automatic folding second row seats.
